“What You Did for the Least of These”: An Easter Witness of Charity and Unity in Areka

Easter solidarity meal by YIELD Ethiopia and Areka Church, inspired by Matthew 25:40, bringing unity, dignity, and shared compassion across communities.

YIELD Ethiopia, in collaboration with Areka Holy Saviour Catholic Church, organized an Easter lunch in a spirit of solidarity with people in need, including children, as a concrete expression of compassion, dignity, and shared humanity during the Easter season.

The initiative was inspired by the Gospel message, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). In that spirit, the gathering brought together people from diverse backgrounds—different religions, age groups, and social experiences—who came together not as strangers, but as members of one human family sharing common needs, hopes, and dignity.

Beyond sharing a meal, the event became a space of encounter, reflection, and unity. It highlighted the importance of standing in solidarity with those who are most vulnerable and reaffirmed that acts of simple sharing can build bridges across differences and strengthen social cohesion.

Monica Haile, founder of the Just One Meal Initiative under YIELD Ethiopia, emphasized this vision, stating: “It is through sharing that we can live in harmony—unity is what makes true coexistence possible. What may seem small, like a meal, becomes meaningful when it is shared with love and intention.”

Echoing this message, Permanent Deacon Tilahun Honja of Areka Holy Saviour Catholic Church noted: “Though we may differ in background, belief, or status, our needs are the same,” underscoring the shared humanity that connects all people and calling for continued compassion and solidarity in everyday life.
